BIRD Lab In Ethiopia
Dec 14, 2022 BIRD Lab was launched at Addis Ababa University, school of Public Health in partnership with UNICEF and Ethiopian Health Education and Promotion Professionals Association (EHEPA)

What is Behavioral Insights?
Behavioral insights help to understand the factors that influence human behaviors and practices, such as conscious and unconscious motivations, barriers, and biases, as well as socio-cultural and structural factors that influence people’s decisions. combine insights from psychology, economics, and the broader social sciences to reveal how people make decisions.
BIRD Lab’s Main Activities
Capacity Development
The lab will provide Social behavioral change (SBC) experts with the knowledge they need to better understand the dynamics driving individuals and social change….
Research
The lab will carry out in-depth research to understand behavioral patterns, cognitive biases, and decision-making processes, design SBC interventions, prototype interventions, and test interventions….
Collaboration
The lab will create alliances with universities and ministries to advocate for the integration and application of behavioral insights in their respective programs and curricula and will advocate the application of behavioral insight…
Scale Up Assistance
The lab will provide technical assistance and advice to organizations in the adoption of behavioral insights, advising on scaling up behavioral solutions……..
What We Do

Bird Lab
The BIRD Lab uses a combination of methods and frameworks from applied behavioral sciences, human-centered design, and implementation research to achieve social and behavioral change.
The BIRD Lab draws on many existing frameworks for behavioral research and design, including the methodological steps outlined in the DEPTHS approach:
Define
We start by taking time to be sure we are precise about what problem and which specific behaviours we are working to address.
Explore
We use research and data to understand the sociocultural, environmental, and psychological factors at play.
Prototype
We use human-centered design methods to co-create tentative solutions directly with the people who will use them.
Test Hypotheses
We use implementation research and experimental methods to iteratively trial and adapt interventions in context.
Scale
We solve with a systems lens, scaling by learning and learning by scaling.
Current Projects
Behavioral insight study on community engagement and school ownership for improved learning outcomes.
Behavioral insight study on barriers to and facilitators of youth employment, education, mental health, aspirations and acquiring skill and designing behavioral solutions.
Behavioral Insight study on informed SBC strategy for girls and children with disabilities enrollment, retention and learning outcomes in three regions.
Applying behavioral insight approach for jointly selected public health challenges.
